Saying Goodbye
We had to be to the church at 4 to look at the body and make sure it was okay. My husband looked as if he was sleeping. I kissed hips lips and said a prayer for my dead husband. His children and ex wife came in during the family viewing hour. I didn’t mind because they were his kids and she was his first wife. Lauren was crying while her brother Todd held onto her. Their mother sat in the back not coming up to view the body. Lauren hugged me and then hugged the boys. Todd shook my hand and then the boys hands. Alana just sat on the side watching me and making sure I was okay. Soon people started to file in from every where. My husband was an avid worker in the church and in the community so everybody stopped by to pay their respects. I smiled a lot and acted fake to get through the night. Soon I saw Bleek come in. I held my temper and when he approached me to give me a hug I accepted it against my better judgment.
He leaned into my ear and whispered, “Tasia I am so sorry for your lost. If you need anything, any-thing just let me know because you know I know how to comfort you during your time of need.” I pulled away from him but held my peace not wanting to make a mockery of my husband’s funeral. When I looked up Jay was standing behind us. I saw his temples pulsating and I wasn’t sure but I thought he heard what Bleek said to me.
I lightened up while Jay approached and hugged me. “I am so sorry Tasia.” He looked at Bleek and Bleek smiled at him.
“Jaywhatup?”
Jay looked at him and said dryly, “What up.” Jay then walked to the back to sit down. Alana approached and hugged and kissed Bleek and they went and sat down by my son’s. As I was preparing to take my seat I looked back and noticed an older, distinguished black woman approaching the casket. She had a handsome middle aged man on her arm. The man was familiar to me but I wasn’t sure where I knew him from. The lady walked proud even though she walked with a cane. She was short and petite like me and they kept their eyes on the casket. I happen to catch wind of my husband’s ex wife who appeared to have her jaw on the floor. They went to the casket as I watched from the side. A slight smiled graced her lips as she patted my husband’s hand. It was at that moment that I knew exactly who shewas.
As she turned from the casket I called out, “Mattie Mayweather?”
She looked at me. “Yes? Do I know you?”
I looked at her and smiled. “No you don’t but I know you. I am Mrs. Peach, Kevin’s widow.”
She placed her petite hand on her chest. “Oh my…”
I looked to the man with her.
